VAR SERVICES PROGRAM INFORMATION
Service Knowledge Tip of the Month
"Service As An Additional Source Of VAR Revenue"
I know, we hear it all of the time. "Well, with the economy like this, you have to expect sales to be down!". But do we? Service is universally treated by business as an expense item. It also is almost always associated with long term agreements. But viewed from the perspective of the contract owner (VAR or Service Provider or Both!), it is an annuity that continues to be in effect long after the associated hardware sale is gone. It is also one of the BEST ways to stay close to your customer over the long haul and to position yourself as integral to their business. So how do these attributes play into new and or additional sources of revenue for the VAR? How can we help customers lower their expense structure in tough economic times like these and in the process, provide a VAR with new or additional sources of annuity revenue streams?
Service! As a VAR, you have been successful by getting and staying close to the needs of your customers. Some of those customers may be regional in nature, others may have a national or even international network footprint. You have been effective in meeting the needs of those customers over the years or you would not be in business. Now more than ever, you should be talking to your customers about services. That means looking at ways to lower their expense structure, increase the service and support levels where needed, and reducing levels of support for areas that are non-critical to the operations of their business. All of these issues are potential money saving options for your customers.
A great place to start is by examining what maintenance agreements your customer may have in place directly with the manufactures of the products that they use in their networks. Alternative service offerings are often many times less expensive than those offered by the manufacturer. For large networks, the actual maintenance cost per maintenance event on an annual basis can be in the thousands of dollars per event when calculated against the population of products that are covered. I once calculated along with a customer that they were paying an average of $20,000 per maintenance event annually based on their network product population! That opens up a whole lot of room for you as a valued and trusted VAR to propose reductions in network support expenses...and that is where you can provide real value to your customers as well as new sources of revenue for your VAR business!
Network Dynamics can provide you with the national and international support offerings that allow you to "Play with the Big Dogs" in terms of coverage and support offerings for your customers. You maintain complete control of your customer relationship by partnering with NDI to provide service offerings that have real value to your customers.
Call my office to set up an appointment to discuss how NDI can add bottom line value both to your VAR based business and to the success of your customers. Coming next month, "How to Differentiate Your VAR Business with Services".
Cheers and good selling.
Life Is To Be Lived With Passion!
Here is a picture of my good friend Bill Griffin, Founder and CEO of The SeaChange Group Software Corporation of Marblehead, MA, waiting to hook up yet another giant Bluefin Tuna on my fishing boat "White Fang". Bill shares my passion for deep sea fishing and we never miss a chance to do battle with one of the worlds most beautiful and challenging big game fish, Tuna!
Here are a few interesting facts about this great Pelagic Species:
Atlantic Bluefin Tuna
Thunnus thynnus
Bluefin tunas have streamlined bodies built for speed and endurance. They can even retract their dorsal and pectoral fins into slots to reduce drag.
Type: Fish
Diet: Carnivore
Average lifespan in the wild: 15 years
Size: 6.5 ft (2 m)
Weight: 550 lbs (250 kg)
Did you know? In January 2001, a prime, 444-pound (201-kilogram) bluefin tuna sold in a Japanese fish market for $173,600 (¥20.2 million), a world record.
The Atlantic bluefin tuna is one of the largest, fastest, and most gorgeously colored of all the world’s fishes. Their torpedo-shaped, streamlined bodies are built for speed and endurance. Their coloring—metallic blue on top and shimmering silver-white on the bottom—helps camouflage them from above and below. And their voracious appetite and varied diet pushes their average size to a whopping 6.5 feet (2 meters) in length and 550 pounds (250 kilograms), although much larger specimens are not uncommon.
Atlantic bluefins are warm-blooded, a rare trait among fish, and are comfortable in the cold waters off Newfoundland and Iceland, as well as the tropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea, where they go each year to spawn. They are among the most ambitiously migratory of all fish, and some tagged specimens have been tracked swimming from North American to European waters several times a year.
They are prized among sport fishers for their fight and speed, shooting through the water with their powerful, crescent-shaped tails up to 43 miles (70 kilometers) per hour. They can retract their dorsal and pectoral fins into slots to reduce drag. And some scientists think the series of “finlets” on their tails may even serve to reduce water turbulence.
Bluefins attain their enormous size by gorging themselves almost constantly on smaller fish, crustaceans, squid, and eels. They will also filter-feed on zooplankton and other small organisms and have even been observed eating kelp. The largest tuna ever recorded was an Atlantic bluefin caught off Nova Scotia that weighed 1,496 pounds (679 kilograms).
